Recently I spoke with Rotarians who asked…”How can we keep the brain alive as we age?” It’s a question we hear often. Believe it or not … we keep an older brain alive in pretty much the same way we reboot a brain at any age. Use it in new ways to spark even any ordinary day.
Here are a few tricks to get you started today:
1. Ask the question what if…? Rather than simply accept, listen, or operate with
out much thought – add more mental motion on your part. How so? Simply imagine a solution, or an alternative route to work. Or ask … what if…?
2. Pop a new CD into the car on your way to work and consider what the composer had in mind in writing the words.
3. Give something away to a person you admire … without any expectation in return. Then bask in the surprise and delight that person shows for your gesture.
4. Hike the stairs at a clip and avoid any elevators for one day. Breathe deeply on the way up, and imagine the charge these sprints add to your mental batteries.
5. Sleep in another room, on the opposite side of the bed, with soft classical music in the background, or under the stars. Go to sleep early and wake up late. Enjoy the extra creativity your brain will likely generate by creating a solution that overcomes a problem at work.
There... you've used at least six intelligences ... and you’ve invigorated your brain at the same time. What awesome mental trick do you have up your sleeve for today?
