When Firms Value Workers

Here are 5 top comments that came from workers at firms where they are valued for their efforts and talents:

1. We speak and feel heard here at work … so that ideas shared often become improvements implemented.Handshake%202.jpg

2. Pay is generally fair for most work we do here.

3. Talents from many of us can be found in the firm’s esteemed talent pool in this workplace.

4. People of all backgrounds …  find daily opportunities to add value to the firm’s vision… based on their unique offerings.

5. Daily opportunities exist to grow…  and incentives for personal  and organizational advancement  are common … where we work.

Can you claim all five comments about your place of employment? Which statement would you add to proves a firm values and supports its workers?

Who made the judgement which firms where workers were "valued for their efforts and talents?" What was the methodology?

Interesting question, Wally -- there are concrete measures in place to survey workers who love their workplace. Wegman's wins yearly at Fortune 500 recogition contest in this area for example. Workers tend speak out wherever they are listened to -- and some firms do better than others at listening:-) What do you hear from satisfied workers?

Actually, Ellen, I was wondering if we were looking at a tautology, that the way we defined a workplace that valued people was one where they answered positively to those questions.

To be blunt, I find surveys that try to determine if workers love their workplace as a full-employment program for consultants and a massive waste of time. What fascinates me is what companies, like Wegman's, DO to create workplaces where people have high morale and are productive. I like to try to look behind the answers to questions we have in your post and determine what happens in the workplace every day, what the supervisor does every day, what the company does every day that results in an answer like what you report.

One of the reasons I read this blog regularly is that you post things that make me want to peel back the onion and figure out what's going on and how it can make a difference. This post did that for me.

Wally -- you and I are on the exact same page on this one! I am far more interested in what we can do well in this department and in creating tactics with the brain in mind:-) It's what will create a caring and effective work community as I see it. Thanks for that reminder Wally -- you said it better than me!
