Tossing the Old - Reframe for New

Today I stopped into Wegmans for a quick coffee and glance at the newspaper. People all around my seat dismantled Christmas greens … and discussed plans for their newest displays.

Holiday bells and bobbles were labeled and boxed … holly and mistletoe trashed … as if the Christmas season suddenly joined ranks with our fading memories. Even seasonal  wreaths and festive dishes … reduced in price only a week ago … today were packed into crates … to clear the aisles for a newer design.

When was the last time your business cleared away the old to make room for the fresh? Do you ever simply start again?

E.B. White … a favorite author said it this way …

“I arise in the morning torn between the desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. That makes it hard to plan the day.”

Interestingly, the human brain rewires itself nightly … while we sleep … and that process prepared you to start fresh the following day … the way Wegmans keeps business fresh and alive through change.

What would a reboot look like at your organization:

1. Newly refreshed office space?
2. Piles of folders organized?
3. Art changed to match this year’s vision?
4. Old stock returned and new ordered?
5. Offering promotions to people who expect less and deserve more?
6. New technology ordered to replace the old?
7. An old habit kicked in favor of a plan for one new practice

Like Wegmans constantly  changes their store and shelves … we often kick start a business by preparing the way for a change of mind. Do you agree?

Hmmm... you give us much food for thought here, Ellen. Organization is key to reframe for new and it's something I keep working on. ;-)

Hello Ellen,

A lot of businesspeople might be inclined to see the removal of seasonal displays to make room for something else as, well, seasonal - but the insight that there could be more of real productive value to the individual and organizational dynamics it set in motion is decidedly valuable.

Excellent post - I agree with Robyn: lots to think about here - thanks!

Robyn, ironically enough, my career is getting a long-awaited reboot starting next week. I'm finally getting a position I've been working toward for quite a while!

I've been in Project Management for some time now, but ever since I finished my Master's 10 years ago, I wanted to move into consulting. It's been a long road, getting a Doctorate and dabbling in Independent Consulting (I found out it's not for me!)

Now, starting next week, I'll be moving over to my company's consulting side and starting a whole new career! LOTS of new neuron connections, to be sure!

What a terrifying, yet thrilling and wonderful blessing!

To organize and think or plan ahead -- without losing that creative touch added on a heartbeat -- wow - what a challenge. An adventure too! Thanks Robyn - for showing us how it's done!

Thanks for stopping by Jim, and like you - I too saw the intrinsic value in a whole new light. When I think of the firms that stay the same and show the same old - same old - for years - I see why Wegmans stays relevant at the cutting edges. Fresh - new- alive - and ready to roll! That's my new plan for 2008 at the MITA center! You?

Wow Bob -- I am so excited to hear about the new vision and cannot wait to hear how it plays out! Bravo!

Oops! Sorry, Ellen - I forgot which blog I was at! Must have been my moment of insanity for the day... :-\
