Golf Links to Business Brains

It doesn’t surprise me that golf benefits a business brain … or that in winter I miss even those annoying challenges out on the back nine. Did you know, however, that golf can literally raise your business IQ?

My kids gave me a box of my favorite blue golf balls for Christmas … while just outside the window … we watched New York relentlessly impose her anti-golf golf_hotel_logo_artwork.gifJanuary chills.  That's why I find myself stoking the fireplace today and at the same time … visualizing my next shot from the tee.

Regardless of how busy we are … as soon as the snow melts … I plan another brisk round of golf. Aside from the game’s sheer adventure … golf’s a mental tonic at work. How so?

From that first shot off the tee … golfers capitalize on kinesthetic intelligence and naturalistic intelligence.  The game also adds brain chemicals for sharper focus. A growing body of research suggests how the links hold mental benefits for business brains … beyond what most golfers realize. Perhaps more even than rich alliances and friendships gained on the course, golf keeps players in top mental form.

Regardless of age barriers … or setbacks like that famous little fox who steals golf balls in Montana … the game offers a unique way of problem solving through movement. Luckily … golf benefits depend more on daily choices than on healthy players.

In spite of a recent bout with cancer … Marjorie Brewer at  60 … still swings a driver like a pro and putts like a metronome. She’s out four times a week … near the grounds of her law office. People far younger struggle to keep up … and it’s a good game when you can. In one of the persistent mysteries of an aging brain … Marjorie found there are tremendous health care benefits to doing what she loves most – golf. But others see far more than bodily health … in Marjorie’s high-performance mind. She’s not alone either.

At 58 … Murray Jensen expected golf to help his brain to slow the effects of  cardiovascular disease.  Murray’s doctor seemed surprised by the mental progress and new alertness that boosted Murray’s once frail health. What could a golf game do for your business mind?

Did you know the working brain demands 21 percent of the entire oxygen to your body?  Not surprisingly … when you golf  … you enrich that oxygen supply and so add fuel to capitalize on more mental capabilities. How so?

Sit in a lecture or staff meeting and you’ll use less than 3 percent of your brainpower. Mentor another golfer during a game … on the other hand …  and you use more than 90 percent.

At the MITA Brain Based Business Renewal Center … where we work to optimize brainpower … golf simply reinforces winning mental patterns. When my team won this year’s District Rotary Annual Golf Tournament in New York … we recognized serotonin’s help, for instance.  Without a doubt … this well-being hormone improved our golf scores to 4 under par for a game at the top … and then opened new insights for business after the game. Have you seen it too?

Dr. Webber,

Thank you for this information. I can see where some of my clients may be able to apply some of these experiences to their learnings on how to play business golf.

Greetings Mr Business Golf and thanks for stopping by. I see a game a golf coming up - with the brain clearly in mind!

Love your recent blog about integrity at the core of business over at http://innovativebusinessgolf.com

Happy 2008!

Your article hits it very well. I think it may also be worthwhile to point out that the common belief that one only uses less than 20% of our brain while the remaining 80% lie idle is apparently a common myth. I read this recently in a widely distributed article that dealt with common myths and urban legends in the medical field. Could you please comment on that?
Thanks, Frank

Thanks for stopping by Frank, and thanks for the chance to enjoy your insights at http://www.learnaboutgolf.com/ too!

I'd say from 30 years studying this field -- that 10 to 20% is unusually high, rather than low.

The fact that cortisol shuts down the brain as does poor tone, and that lectures works against the brain and that we possess multiple (unused or hidden) intelligences to solve problems daily that go unsolved is the beginning of evidence to dig deeper for me anyway:-)What do you think?

Your post reminds me that I'll be dolfing in FL later this month - another thanks and Happy New Year! Ellen

Hi Ellen,

thanks a lot for your reply. I found the article I mentioned above (you need to go down 7 or 8 paragraphs):
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071220195639.htm

Apparently there is no scientific evidence that certain areas of the brain are unused (quote from the above link follows):

"Dr. Vreeman and Dr. Carroll also explored the popular belief that we use only 10 percent of our brains. Frequently cited by everyone from physicians to comedians (Jerry Seinfeld) and erroneously credited to Albert Einstein, the authors found that there are a lot of ways to disprove this belief. MRI scans, PET scans and other imaging studies show no dormant areas of the brain, and even viewing individual neurons or cells reveals no inactive areas of the brain. Metabolic studies of how brain cells process chemicals show no nonfunctioning areas.

Dr. Carroll and Dr. Vreeman think this myth probably originated with self improvement experts in the early 1900s who wanted to convince people that they had yet not reached their full potential. With the help of these self proclaimed experts (perhaps the descendents of snake oil salesmen), one could tap into the 90 percent of the brain supposedly not being used."

Thanks for the ideas presented here, Frank, and yes - I am very aware of their work that you named since I work with leaders in the medical field daily. There are still many debates about brain facts out there.

Wonderful insights and facts are piling out daily on these topics - using new technology in the imaging areas. I study the facts only to help leaders achieve far more -- with evidence they have done so. That's why I tend to leave those who enjoy the debates handle that end of it.

Those who'd like to see bottom line improvements are more the clients I work with and learn from -- and I am always far too busy as it is -- so it's pretty much all I can handle.

You'd love this research, and I suggest you take a deep dive into it from MIT and Harvard and Columbia and many other medically famous centers. It's amazing. Skeptics are there and they should be -- it's just that I am more working with those who are credibly getting amazing results. It's been 30 years for me -- and I am see seeing the wonders of the mind daily!
