You know; although it never feels like it at the time, situations like this can often result in some of the most life-changing - and exciting - growth experiences! The key is flexibility, resilience - whatever you want to call it - and it's probably the most useful personal quality I've ever managed to develop.
It causes us to look at the situation in new ways (that we'd never have considered otherwise). Almost always there are new opportunities just waiting to be discovered - some of which may be even better than the original plan!
