Diversity's More about Brains than Color

How do you draw from richer diversity in those around you?

Today I’m especially excited about a roundtable I’m facilitating with very diverse leaders.

If you look in on us at any moment … you’d likely ask … What does an engineer and an architect or health professional  have to do with one another? Good question … and I’m glad you asked. diversity.jpg

In my group … we have a common vision to explore. With others I clarified one vision --  to create entrepreneurial directions for leaders.  Would you agree that shared goal gives us common ground? It also compels us to look for talent in each person at the table. Why so?

1. We don’t speak the other person’s jargon – so people at our roundtable try to communicate with more respect. We look for a shared language that inspires differences that will spark ongoing curiosity.

2. None of us sees the whole picture … but neither do others possess the distinctive parts each one of us can bring.  Individual differences shine new lights onto a great vision together.

3. We care less about color, age, or backgrounds when answers abound - that support and develop more humanity with mutual benefits.

4. No one person leads in ways that inspire all to deep dive for gems, and so I tend to pass leadership roles around.  In that way,  we each learn as we lead – and lead as we learn.

5. We can all ask two footed questions related to one target – to identify gaps and point to odd parts that may go missing otherwise. If we answer questions only from any one source, or if we fail to listen across differences - we all lose.

My roundtables increasingly showcase talents and skills from diverse people who tell me they remain far too quiet in traditional meetings. How do you draw from deep differences that could make us all richer?
