“I can’t read books anymore because they overwhelm me,” a frustrated worker said during a brain based institute. And he looked just as frazzled as his words sounded. How do you rebound from panic or mental blocks when you hit a concrete wall at work?
Overwhelmed feelings are a bit like panic attacks to your brain … in that they pull the floor out beneath you. No wonder solutions flee for the moment. The
panicked brain sends back messages that there is no place good to go – and we tend to believe it.
Luckily your brain is holds extraordinary talents for tackling problems that come from being overwhelmed. How so?
1. Overwhelmed with reading lately? Here's a brain based solution that works quite well, and offers a takeaway from the printed page too. After each paragraph or two – simply jot one practical way you will use an idea that jumps off the page – to improve something you do at work. For instance – when you read this blog – snap up one idea that relates to you or your workplace and make a note how you will use it for benefit.
2. Panicked about your relationship with a supervisor? Pick up an extra coffee on the way into work – and offer it to that person. Wish the boss a great day – and expect no favor in return. Already you have grown dendrite brain cells for an easier relationship with your superior. You’ve just assured your brain that a new relationship is possible – and now relax and watch your mind work it out in your favor.
3. Bombarded with too many details or demands? Create a list of ten top priorities for the day and make sure you squeeze in one fun event just for you. When your brain sees an advanced organizer – panic decreases in favor of taking the first step to drop the list to 9 and then to 8 – until you’ve covered all 10. Apologize to the people whose demands did not fit into the top ten yet – and then add these demands near the top for the following day.
4. Frustrated with financial challenges? Make one deliberate money move today – no matter how small - that will make or save you a dollar tomorrow. It’s that simple to free your logical mathematical intelligence and you literally rewire your brain to save, sell or invest for growing success. While it’s true that it could take up to a month to land that next solid contract – there will be smaller moves you can make today that will add a good shot for a better move the following day.
5. Running to beat a racing clock? Surely you’d agree with H. Jackson Brown, Jr., a New York Times
Ok, now that you have glanced over the list of 5 ways to beat that overwhelmed syndrome – it’s time to draw a few personal benefits. Jot down one suggestion you read about here – that will create new opportunities for your next workday. Oh by the way, does writer’s block stop you from finding or sharing your best ideas? If so - write one cool question to yourself about the topic – pose one query that interests you – and then sleep on it. The next morning you’ll find yourself chasing a question to die for, with the kind of curiosity that lead Einstein to a wonderful life of discovery. It’s just the way the human mind works when primed past overload.
Try out any of these tactics - and your brain will respond by creating new neuron pathways toward a calmer and smarter response to whatever problem blocks your progress. Believe it or not - you’re already well on your way out of the problem – because your brain will do the rest. What do you think?
