Did the Wall Street Journal Sell US Brainpower to Rupert Murdoch Today?

It’s hard to turn on stations like NRP, WSJ, CNN, or read respected blogs  without picking up on some buzz lately without another take on Rupert Murdoch's purchase of the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones - which finalized today.

Bigger questions have yet to be addressed in the Riupert Murdoch deal though… and I am one who waits for better news. How about you? Are you disturbed as I am ... by key parts being ignored in this hot one man dknMURDOCH_narrowweb__300x412%2C0.jpgeal?

Ok … we are told that Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate News Corp. settled on an agreement to buy out the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones from the Bancroft family.

These private owners let their media empire go for a $5.6 billion. A sizeable chunk of change by anybody’s books!

Let’s take a look at what they got for their investment though. The Wall Street Journal is still America’s  second-largest newspaper. Not a bad start … and there is more….

Murdoch's $60-a-share bid is a 67% premium over Dow Jone's share price when it became public. Murdoch's News Corp. also owns the Times in London, Fox Television, the New York Post, and MySpace.com, to name a few media entities.

1. Why do people sporting dollars float to the top of media coverage controls?
2. What do America's rich know about creative pursuits that keep brilliance alive?
3. Where are women’s voices fit near  the top of media influences here?
4. How much is medial linked to who gets ahead and who is trampled as a nation moves forward?
5. Are we hemmed in by Murdoch’s and Bancrofts' influences – without a wider mix of intelligences that can keep us in the global race?

6. Have we settled today for a tragically narrow communication focus?

Each time money and powerful influence lead us down yet another narrow American pathway - we dig larger sinkholes.

The world looks in to spotlight US brainpower from a wider circle – and talent exists here! Hopefully reflection remains also.

Will we miss innovative ideas - and cutting edge practices for a new world order – the American potential that  could take us onto the world stage of media progress?

Did we just lose that chance this country needs for a better future .. once again today?

What do you think?

» Rupert Murdoch & News Corp. Acquire Dow Jones & Wall Street Journal from MarketingBlurb
Last month, I published a post about Rupert Murdoch's bid to acquire Dow Jones.  Today, after months of battles, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. finally succeeded in acquiring Dow Jones from the Bancroft family.  The question remains, is ... [Read More]

Or did we just get a little bit closer to having a view that is not so US centric? A view that perhaps could help us play a better, if not bigger, role in the world of global commerce.

When I am out of the US it is often quite startling to see how we are perceived. I know for myself that if I can learn to see how I am seen, then it helps me to be a better person. I am hoping this will happen for us all.

Great question, Roger, and thanks for throwing it into the ring.

You build a great case for how we are perceived - and I too hear it from top leaders as I travel outside the country!

I'd love to hear more about how this deal might improve the US image - which has been so deeply scarred lately. Can you elaborate a bit more to help us understand?

Thanks for stopping by - and adding your wisdom to the deal!

Of course the most obvious issue is how we are perceived politically. I'm not one to change just to suit others. I just try to take how I am perceived into consideration. I don't think a country can please everyone but perhaps we could do a better job of making our point understood.

In business we often focus only on what we are doing and relegate the rest of the world to the back pages. This is not unusual, every country does this. The trouble is that we rarely look at the consequences of our actions in countries and on companies outside of the US. Protectionism is a knee-jerk reaction that illustrates our lack of understanding of our place in the Global economy.

Perhaps if we viewed the need to provide a decent standard of living as something Global and not national it would help us see the need to be in the whole game, not just to play in our own corner. Is ti a shock to anyone that we consume more than 30% of the worlds energy and yet we have only 5% of the worlds population? I'm not advocating a scarcity mentality, just a fair distribution of opportunity.

There are some points to start with...
