Rather than hit the floor running, why not set the alarm 20 minutes earlier to allow time to stop and feed your brain. You’ll not only jumpstart a far better day, but you could extend your lifetime. It’s how the brain adds to its value.
An ideal might be to awaken to bacon, egg and coffee aromas as a reminder to take in a good breakfast before hitting the road. That’s because - familiar breakfast foods trigger the olfactory bulb, which controls scents - the most powerful of the five senses. Other triggers will help too.
Any memories of these scents, for instance, can send signals to the amygdala, which operates your emotional center. Simply put the thought or the smell of a good breakfast can add serotonin to brighten your day.
You may remember, how the hypothalamus controls your body appetite from inside the brain stem – and in that stem area - other parts of the brain help to get your day off to a decent start. This area regulates your breathing, adjusts your heart rate and controls your body temperature.
Why not work with your brain over breakfast -
1. Consider adding at least one of the 5 top brain foods to your morning menu and you’ll also add value to your mental operations for the day.
2. Jot down a few top targets for your day on a small card and slip it into your pocket as a checklist to ensure you start a productive day.
For instance I threw a few blueberries onto yogurt this morning. My list reminds me that during the day I plan to contract three leaders by email and type the Rotary agenda for our next meeting. Simple as that – but the deliberate steps fuel my brain for well-being over breakfast.
