Strange events call people together, as happened last night when I met Jose Davila a Wegman’s employee and business leader with unique talents for customer service that suggest why I’ll return to Wegman’s. Jose’s story also shows why so many of us recommend this fine food-chain.
When Capital Magazine editors asked me for a feature article for their November issue, I decided to explore how companies today compete for those hard
to land places at the top. Not surprisingly, I discovered that winners tend to champion brain based problem solvers – and yesterday I met another such leader at Wegmans.
Let me back up though …. here’s what happened … I locked my keys in the car after making a few purchases at Wegman’s to help me over a huge allergy attack.
When I went back into the store to see if I could get a person to call AAA, I met Jose Davila. Sensing something may be out of the ordinary, Jose took time to help open the car door. When the door failed to yield – he drove me home as he was just off duty.
While I did not expect this help – because firms today follow far more bureaucratic rules and insurance fears than the communities of yesteryear – and besides people are busy at work, I still valued it. Jose represents the epitome of business intelligence!
Know people in your area who problem solve with the brain in mind? They get remarkable results, and surprising solutions show up - against the backdrop of shifting horizons. Wegmans is the best example of this in my city, and Jose’s generosity highlighted again their store’s strength. How so?
Some firms worry about law suits, others carry out rigid rules that prevent much contact between clients and their top personnel. I’ll admit … there seems to be rational reasons for some of these cautious and seemingly cold procedures.
Yet, Jose used a much higher and freer approach - to engage multiple intelligences into what hopefully winds up at Wegman’s as increased support and productivity.
We’ve all felt the brunt of rigid rules or met a weak worker. It makes meeting a leader like Jose – who uses multiple intelligences is to help others – even more valued.
Thanks Jose Davila, for inspiring me - with your amazing integration of skills that became problem solving and customer service tools that won for Wegmans and won for one of their keen supporters! I hope they have an award for service like yours!
