Is Neuroscience Simply Common Sense Where You Work?

When Stephanie West Allen reminded me today of a fascinating article in Business Week -- The Business Brain In Close-Up I revisited a “common sense” section that still intrigues me.

When it comes to common sense research and evidence provides the best footnote. Right? Why then, do we often say ... we know all that already, before we do it?

People often tell you brain based practices are common sense. That statement leads me to ask ...  do business leaders who pony up $3,500 to attended David Rock’s neuroscience of leadership sessions ... already apply his brain based teaching? If so, their employees are simply not seeing its change in the workplace.

Check out the article at The Business Brain In Close-Up.

"It's full of possibilities," says University of Southern California leadership sage Warren Bennis, who has long been interested in neuroscience's lessons for leaders. "What worries me is people being taken in by the language of it and ending up with stuff we've known all along."

Have you often heard people tell you they already knew that – when you see little or no evidence in their day?

Before discoveries about the brain can lead to growth in business productivity ... a we'll want to move common sense into common practice. Al least until others spot the research and evidence that comes when people do what they sense they do to improve their business results. What do you think?

In the 8th Habit, Stephen R. Covey simply states:

"To know and not to do is not to know"

IMHO Leaders need to help to develop feasible action plans to convert (new?) knowledge into transformative organisational results.

Hi Galba, I'm hoping you quote Ellen Weber as much as you do Stephen Covey. In my mind her work is just as significant!

There is a story about Sir Laurence Olivier on a night when he gave one of his greatest performances of Hamlet. When his friends went backstage, they didn't find Sir Laurence happy. Instead, he was crying and slamming his fist into his thigh.

"God, Larry," one of his friends burst out, "Why are you acting like this? That was one of your greatest performances ever."

"I know," replied Olivier, "but I don't know why."

Sometimes the role of neuroscience is to tell us why something that is "common sense" works, so that we can use the technique more effectively.

Here's an example. My mother always taught me to count to ten when I was angry. I thought it was simply a delaying tactic. Many years later I read a study that told me that concentrating on linear or logical tasks, like counting or running down a checklist, uses parts of the brain that are not used for emotional responses. That, in turn, led to using checklists as a way to help first responders stay calm in high stress situations.
