The Mechanic is Smarter than the Doctor

Imagine rolling along a country highway when the engine in your car suddenly dies. Two cars stop to help you. One driver is a heart specialist and the other is a top-notch mechanic. Who is smarter? For the intelligence you need at the moment – you’d likely pick the mechanic. On the other hand, who would choose a mechanic if you stopped with severe chest pains - and you could choose a doctor's intelligence?

Ok,  now imagine that a broker guzzled your life savings outright - and refused to budge on any compromise.  Two people heard your pleas for help and offered to step in. Let’s say one - a chef just won piecrust baking awards in Paris -- and the other won recognition for rolling heads in court, to stop unethical behavior. Who is smarter at that moment? A artificial_intelligence.jpgnew synergy exists between concepts of smart, skilled and intelligent - and the experts are rethinking how we use each, because of the brain's activity that can now be measured.

For over thirty years I have studied and written books and columns on human intelligence and I've been amazed during the last decade at how the concepts have changed - now that we know a great deal more about the human brain. My simply examples here - reflect a small glance at these changes and suggest a few ways experts rethink intellectual strengths.

For instance - we now know that each person possesses and can develop at least eight distinctictive intelligences, and that one of these is interpersonal intelligence - which impacts how we respect and learn from those whose ideas might differ from ours. Before multiple intelligences was discovered - we may not have recognized "respecting others' ideas" as intelligence. Even the words smart, intelligence, and skilled wear delightful new colors - when we relate these words to magnetic images of the human brain in operation. It's rather exciting to consider the extravagance of a human brain - through a current lens of modern neuroscience, when we see changing applications and growth opportunities that implies.

You likely get the gist of why Brain Based Business questions traditional hierarchies that name some as smarter, or more intelligent without regard to how or why, or what that really means. Truth is, we all possess multiple intelligences – and we can grow smarter in these daily because the human brain grows dendrite brain cell connections based on what we do in a day. What is your unique mental mix?

Who do we tell about this new brain fact – when broken systems were built around some careers being smarter or deserving more money and recognition than others?

How would we begin to reward genuine intelligences that likely fell through the cracks while only a select few gained recognition?

Care to test your own smarts? What do you think?
