What would a driver safety program look like - with more of the brain in mind?
That's the question Irish leader ... Kieran ... asked - and that sparked this MITA Series in the first place. That question led to a bareboned 5-step driver safety plan. The intent is to benefit driver safety programs from brain based insights. ![]()
Step one of any MITA program to engage more brainpower for improved safety - is…
QUESTION.... Why so?
MITA programs start with the kind of 2-footed questions that raise curiosity and build new dendrite brain cell connections for improved driver safety. Simply stated ... questions spark multiple intelligences for improved practices ….
In contrast - to merely tell drivers about safety facts information or to lecture is to work against the driver's brain.
What then, should a driver safety leader ask in order to create safety programs with the brain in mind?
Here are 5 questions that started successful new driver programs and practices.
1. How could parents strengthen a driver education safety program? The result… A Parent taught Driver Education Program.
2. How can people’s spatial intelligence add to their driving safety? The result …
Show street signs and then challenge drivers-in-training to suggest meanings from each sign to increase curiosity and practice safety techniques.
3. What online tasks could help drivers complete a driver safety program successfully? The result … Practice tests driving students can take online for only $10.00 – a reasonable cost considering most who take it will pass their driver test on the first try.
4. How can we engage more compelling questions for commercial driver training? The result ... Create your own “Frequently asked Questions” and post responses in well written prose – made available to all driving students.
5. What statistics can be presented and measured to enhance a driver training program? The result … A program was created around the fact that 43% of first year drivers will crash and 37% of second year drivers will crash. This innovative program was then assessed to show a 70% reduction in auto crashes annually. Rather compelling improvement against serious odds – all through questioning.
Here is a simple approach to question more effectively in your driver safety program.
- First, Identify your program’s top strength
- Second, Highlight one driver problem to showcase
- Third, Connect your strength to solve that problem
Of course – once the safety program is created – the key will be to keep driver’s curiosity alive for on-going safety issues addressed by your program. Do this through questions that draw from drivers' multiple intelligences. Now that's another wonderful saga in MITA leadership development programs.
I do have one personal question on the topic though…
How can a person’s brain reboot to drive on the left side of the road for a week in Ireland – without stress that literally shrinks my Canadian brain?
If I can figure that out I plan to drive for a week to skirt
Stay tuned to Brain Based Business for MITA step two – TARGET - as it applies to using more brainpower by building on curiosity stirred up for driving safety.

Change directions for changed results. That was Einstein’s motto and I hear it from many in the blogosphere. I’m sold from what I observe in workplaces that excel too. What changes have you seen in driver edu approaches? In the... [Read More]
