Apparently emotional and mental bullying in the workplace hits harder than once thought too. Bullies likely possess very low intrapersonal as well as bankrupt interpersonal intelligence… but they rob collective intelligence from entire teams. My question is, before workplace bullying pops you with a black eye to the soul, what can be done? Do you cultivate opportunities for the bully to grow more personal intelligences – or do you confront the conflict and encourage others to do the same? ![]()
Research shows ... and many of us have witnessed ... how hostile environments harms people and business. It commonly comes through aggression, top-down or rigid rules, gossip or just plain exclusion … and in many cases … it simply stops innovation’s flow.
Dr. Sara Goldstein from Montclair State University and her colleagues from the University of Michigan, and reported in Springer that people exposed to high levels of aggressive behavior, viewed their setting as less safe, and described themselves as less content there. Have you also found that to be so in the workplace?
Bullying is especially tricky because it often brings added stress into a busy or stretched workplace. In addition to lost business opportunities, studies show strong evidence to link relational aggression with social anxiety, loneliness and depression, peer difficulties and substance abuse.
What tactics do you tend to use to transform bullying back into better business? Is the bully bigger than you? Any stories out there?
