African Violet Flowers from a Unique Approach

My African violet reminds me daily that to nurture differences is often to bring out the best in beauty. Other plants draw water from the top of their soil, but this plant craves water deposited into a water section below its roots. That way the plant drinks water at its own pace as long as the water is stored below.

Daily that miracle plant reminds me how human brains flower more when nurtured differently. Did you know – for instance – that the human brain rewires

nightly as you sleep?  Or are you aware that the world around you shapes how your brain develops in unique ways? It makes sense then .. to facilitate unique talent in people with room for differences. But how?

At the moment I chair Rotary’s very talented human resources committee for Camp Haccamo, and I’m aware how differently we each approach and solve problems. Not only that - I find committees too often waste people's time and talent. I'm on this committee only because I believe in its vision, and I feel privileged to work with such talented people around its table. Camp Haccamo provides youth who experience physical and developmental challenges with a summer vacation place to have fun, interact with others in a safe environment and enjoy a splash in the lake or a campfire experience where they can truly participate.

We are about to create together the human resources manual for this camp and I have an idea to draw on more of the unique talents of every committee member, based on my African violet’s ability to bloom differently.

What will you do today in a unique way because your brain rewired again throughout the night? Look to my violet to see how it turns out when we nurture differences, and expect results. People tell me they have never seen an African violet take off like this, and I like to remind them I bought it for a buck three years ago. It was the size of teacup at that time.

What's different about your day because you are there?

Heh, I was just looking at my garden the other day and thinking how nature was such a good analogy to humans. We can only do so much to get our garden to grow, but without the nurturing the garden will for sure die. I think this is the same with leads and managers. As leads and managers, we have to nurture in order for the uniquenss to flow from the people we are leading.

I just bought a flowering tree, Donya Aurora. The peach color flowers is perennial. I also someday hope to find a Japanese flowering tree. Cherry Blossom. Lately I visited a Divine Mercy Shrine, it has a garden and the flowers are so unique. You do not find it ordinarily in the neighborhood. I think the Priest in charge bought it from a different flower shop. Common flowers with different colors. I believe appreciation of flowers can put the mind at peace.

Lucy, I love your notion of apprehension of flowers and wish we could have tea together in the garden you'll create! Yes, it adds to the peace and quiet of the human mind -- even just to read your images! Hopefully you will find the Japanese flowering tree.

I have a Japenese Lilac tree in my front yard and it's magnificent at this time of year.
