Who Parks Up Front?

Thanks to Seth Godin  who asked Where do you park? I found myself wondering… Who parks teams in front spots?

Seth told how … “The manager of the Chase Bank in Pleasantville parks right out front. Her branch is on a quiet street with parking meters available for customers to use.”

I just worked with a man who’s personal obsession with a promotion and competition blinded him to what he could contribute to the team’s quality.  ride%20and%20push%20bus.jpgThe who group lost the deal for their firm, in spite of many talents that could have won.

Seth pointed out that… “the manager parks right out front (in fact, I saw her move her car from two spaces away to an even closer spot today). She has four or five people working in the branch, so if they follow her lead, that's half the spaces.” Have you seen similar leaders?

I too am increasingly convinced that the kind of lead we offer speaks to the kind of parking we do.  Seems to me that transformational leaders rarely take a park me first lead, up front.

Fact is …  you often see transformational leaders simultaneously pushing and riding a bus up to the front spot. Know anybody who parks your group up front?

Ellen, thought provoking, true leaders give credit and accept blame. There should be certain privillages for management but it should not be visable to clients. I have been at the airport where the first class or platinum line was longer than the coach or everybody line. Very few of us moved to the shorter line

Thanks Jim for your insights. Interesting how the lines form and change status:-) I'd love to hear more about your notion of "give credit and accept blame." Any examples?

You and Seth hit the nail on the head with this one, Ellen. It recalls an interesting story of legend within our group...

Years ago, our group's founder arrived at a client's office for a meeting. We had a very long term relationship with this client and someone from our group was on-site at their office on a daily basis.

Our founder and CEO parked "up front" in a visitors spot, and began to get our of his car. It just so happened that one of the client's Sr. VPs was walking by at that very moment. The VP looked at Mr. Wenger and said, "So, you think you're a visitor, huh?"

That's all he had to say. From that day on the visitor spots were off-limits. We parked at the back of the lot like any other employee.

Your post was a good reminder to me. I have to admit that my own personal parking habits have slipped. What the heck - the exercise will do me good :)

My example regarding giving credit and taking blame comes from a sales team i was the head of. We had general account executives, that handled the day to day account needs. My team was the sales specialist, that handled the big ticket items. The account execs, AEs for short, would bring in my team to help close the complex and large dollar sales. The AEs got the leads and my guys closed the deals. My team would always over state the importance of the role played by the AEs when we won the sale. When we lost, my team would take the blame. My guys were much higher paid but we had good team work because we worked hard to make the AEs feel good

That's a real keeper Jim! Thanks for this example. It's sort of easy to see why your guys were much higher paid! Brilliant!
