Hang Upside Down for Your Brain

Thanks to Dan Smith … VP – Publishing, at Know More Media, I read a fascinating post today at, Paving the Way for Memory Lane by Dr. Maoshing Ni.

Mao asked readers if they were ... “Feeling like the absent-minded professor lately?”

How would you answer?

Dr Mao's memory-improving strategies to keep your brain sharp followed, and one tip to turn yourself upside down especially intrigued me.... Did I just say TURN YOURSELF UPSIDE DOWN DAILY?

Think you’d be smarter if you hung upside down?

Having lived in China, where I teach brain based leadership practices to business leaders there, I agreed with statements about Asia’s well deserved reputation for benefiting the mental processes.

Nor was I surprised that … “A dwindling memory and decreased concentration is largely caused by decreased blood flow to the brain and loss of brain cells.” Or even that … ”ginkgo has been confirmed to boost circulation to the brain and other organs, improving memory and cognitive functions.”

But ... hang from my feet?

Dr. Mao’s list of mental gymnastics that maintain a nimble mind caught my attention for several reasons.

Ok, few would deny that we can become more absent-minded as we age, and in fact, most people over the age of 40 experience some memory loss. Perhaps less are aware of Dr. Mao’s reminder that “ most likely causes of a forgetful memory include poor concentration due to brain-chemical imbalance, tiredness, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.”

Check out his list to measure your own cognitive clarity …

1. Get an uninterrupted eight hours of sleep each night.

2. Do a half an hour of cardiovascular exercise every day, such as brisk walking, slow jogging, biking, or swimming. This will improve circulation and increase blood flow to the brain.

3. Turn yourself upside down for a couple of minutes daily.

Hey, Dan you go first … and we’ll all follow… Ok?

Ellen, I either need a jungle gym close by or those hang-upside-down boots things. Or perhaps I can just drape myself over the edge of the couch! One thing I really liked about this article is when Dr. Mao said to regularly do exercises for your brain, like memorizing things, etc. I doubt many people realize their brain needs exercise just like their body in order not to atrophy.

Dan, you are so funny! This actually makes a great deal of sense - when one considers the blood flow increase to the brain -- and what that blood flow increase can do to awaken cognitive sensibilities. Thanks for stopping by with a bit of humor Dan -- that too can jumpstart the day in remarkable ways.

Ellen (and Dan),

I clicked on the post as I'm heading out the door to the fitness center.

Will let you know how I make out upside down on the eliptical machine for 30 minutes.

That is what I'm supposed to do, isn't it?

I am with Dr. Mao on this one. One of my favorite yoga poses is the so called "Sarvanga-asana" or the shoulder-stand pose. It increases blood flow to the head. I always feel re-energized after doing it. Now, I am not claiming that it made me smarter, just less fatigued.

Thanks for this fun piece of advice!

Thanks for dropping by to the upside down brain meeting Steve -- The plot thickens, Dan and all!

I am keen to hear about a 30 minute upside down experience in an elipitical machine. My - I thought I had some things in life figured out.

Now -- I see that all one needs in a day is to hang around a bunch of smart people for better answers to this stuff! Maybe you should try 2 minutes at first though - and track the results -- the stakes seem to be rising on this one! :-)

Wow - Anastasia - I think we are onto something here. As I read your posts I was thinking it would be fun to facilitate an "upside down" conference based on some of the interesting ideas here> Who'd have thought - and yet some of these make perfect sense as you suggest.

It's also why I so enjoy the blogging community to figure this stuff out! Thanks for dropping by....
