Capture Curiosity to Escape Boring Business Meetings

You’ll be interested to know during even a boring business meeting, your brain can capture new curiosity and capitalized on your own time and talent in the dull session…. How so?

When you hook new ideas or insights to something you already know or do, curiosity rises and boredom flees. Well, at least it sinks in size.  It’s how the brain makes sense of new knowledge… Think of it a bit like an old hat rack with hooks that hang new hats or, in this case,  ideas… boredom%25202-thumb.jpg

Experts now show how we can alter the course from boredom to enthusiasm, simply by what we do in that dull session. The key is to make a cool link between what you hear and something you already know or do.

Say you know lots about finances but very little about how accounts operate in foreign exchanges. To escape boredom from pedantic facts, it helps to ask yourself a question that links first to facts you know about accounts in local business deals and those in a foreign market.

For instance you might ask yourself during the talk …

How could we convert the current financial forms we use in local business deals … to create forms for the accounts we plan to do overseas?

The question links what you know and what you’d like to know from the information handed out - dull as it may be presented. In spite of the boring format of your meeting, your own curiosity and creation of an answer hooks the materials together in interesting ways to what you already know. The brain uses the hook to move your ideas forward – past the monotony of your meeting.

Without a doubt, it’s easier when leaders hook what they teach onto what we already know about say…finances, related to business deals in China, or to best practices in global settings. Yet, we needn’t wait to turn boring business meetings into a better business deal – simply by hooking one new ideas discussed to one old idea you already possess.

It’s one surefire way to tackle boredom head-on and win – with the brain in mind. Now that I think of it - perhaps we should also suggest this brain based tactic to the guy running the boring meeting in the first place!  What do you think?
