Bring Beauty to the Workplace?

Have you ever considered how beauty can cut you a pathway across a difficult day at work? Likely as many pictures of beauty exist out there – as there are colors, shapes and textures. Loveliness, though, is also clearly an expression of your brain’s aesthetic response to life, which takes an awareness on your part before it can transform your workplace.

Let’s create a picture of beauty here - that’s a kind of neurology of attraction – to see how beauty cuts a neural pathway through a difficult area of life. Kind of magnificent oasis in the face of madness from the world swirling all around us. beauty.jpg

We each possess an innate neurology of beauty, which is created from genes at birth and further developed and shaped by how you live each day. Your multiple intelligences link you to beauty in ways that can add well being and motivation for living even when storm clouds linger in one area or another of your day. How does it work? Beauty inspirits an aesthetic workplace.

Beauty enters your mind as an asset whenever you throw a winning solution to a particular problem that disadvantages you. Let’s say you feel disrespected in a relationship. Beauty can help you make new decisions that add winning benefits for your next meeting with that person. Start by focusing more on one beautiful visual that you value. How can beauty help happen when pressures seem to be mounting?

Beauty can activate more of your intelligences, and help you spot more splendor in your surroundings, if you view any setting from more than one perspective. That’s also how the mind operates in your favor.  Beauty can transform the most difficult part of your day and can add new shades of color and a new zest for living.

Think of your workplace as a castle for a moment, and let’s look at how beauty could lift your day and boost your spirit for new solutions in a difficult relationship.

First, play beautiful music, and your mind will open to beauty in the fall colors of leaves, in collegial relationships you enjoy, and in the solutions that would improve a tough situation you face. I have NPR classical station on at the moment, and the orchestra is moving my brain waves to take in a better view of life.

Move to my bottom floor of the MITA International Brain Based Center, and I get a close-up look at a tree in my backyard where a Peregrine falcon sat and watched me work a few weeks ago.  If you’ve every seen this bird, you’ve seen the strength of a 40 inch wingspan. He’s not there today – but I still see his confidence in a black cap and moustache, when I look for beauty out that window.

Move to my front window and I see a Japanese Lilac tree I planted when my daughter and son-in-law married. Its leaves fell last week but it looks strong and ready to brace for winter and that adds beauty to winter chills I too face.

Move to my side window and I see a neighbor who hung a Canadian flag beside his American flag to show his appreciation for the country of my birth. That flag stands for a country I love and miss at times, and it reminds me of Canada’s love for peace and beauty and mine too. name.gif

When I stand in my back window I see a tiny winding creek that runs across my back yard, and it makes me laugh to watch it today. I’m laughing because for awhile the small bridge kept tipping into the rising waters each time it rained. On one occasion I almost fell in myself - trying to retrieve the deceptively heavy little bridge. When I look for beauty I almost always laugh more.

Hopefully, windows from my MITA Center, opened a few exquisite views from your workplace.  The castle is also a metaphor of the mind, when you draw from multiple intelligences, and look for beauty as your brain’s aesthetic response of sunshine to even a cloudy day. I plan to golf today to break up a hectic schedule, and my mind is already trained on the beauty I’ll see on the course, in spite of a chill in the air here in New York. How about you?
