Detail Accuracy

Research rings far truer when you see precise details that support the conclusions. Details – when they are accurate can validate materials, lead to breakthrough computations, and add to profitability. Details speak from the curvatures, thickness, or aperture of a lens – and they sing from stories that use supportive facts rather than rely on mere opinions.

Certainly, at times we omit giving details in favor of encouraging imagination which can encourage new wings for a team’s ideas. At other times less is more. If you begin meetings with too many details, for instance, by the end of the meeting you will have failed to address some of the most important problems. Too many or inaccurate details cause people to miss forests for the trees. stand%2520detail%252001.png

Attention to details provides an editing tool for projects at work, when people review their projects in detail, so that systems work far better than systems not checked and rechecked for accuracy of detail. An architect, for instance, begins to draw detail into plans – and these change on each review as the sketch progresses closer to the building that will be rolled out from the plan. It’s similar to the way details can work in any plan to review and improve the original drafts.

Details make us who we are, and in so doing they also influence who we become. You also see it in those who take the time to spell you name right. They can also be a pain, and if you’ve ever written a grant, or filled out forms for any bureaucrat for pretty much anything, you tend to run from the unreasonable appetite for detail.

Have you listened to the details of people whose smart skills include motivation and teaching others. Dale Carnegie described it best when he said… Your purpose is to make your audience see what you saw, hear what you heard, feel what you felt. Relevant detail, couched in concrete, colorful language, is the best way to recreate the incident as it happened and to picture it for the audience.

People tend to think in generalities and then they live in detail. Even when the general plans are well drawn, there are often flaws in the details that invite more accurate inspection. Success in any career requires careful attention to polish those details, and to do so we learn to concentrate and pay attention to how details can enhance the whole.
