Sometimes if you speak, you can resolve conflicts and offer mind-bending contributions which light up a room. Other times your words – regardless of the good tone you use – will fill your own brain and others with the harmful hormone, cortisol. ![]()
The same is true for silence. At certain times silence is golden, as the song says so well. At other times, though, to remain silent is to cause a shutdown in your brain’s healthy operations, and increase neuron connections for anxiety and stress.
So… when do you speak and when do you stay silent? The answer is simple – you choose! There is a catch … if you want to light up rooms and nurture a healthy brian though. Here are 5 questions to ask as you decide whether to speak up or shut up…
1. Will what I say show my willingness to learn and to improve the situation for all?
3. Is the information I have what I need to resolve conflict?
4. Have I allowed time and space to quiet my emotions?
5. Will my words show more possibilities than problems?
Try these questions, and if your answer to all or most of them is yes, then speak with the answers in mind for delightful solutions. If not stay quiet, be good to you, and reboot your brain for the kind of serotonin response that leads you and the group forward. What do you think?
