Over at Reflect to Make Choices You can Live With, Galba Bright added some wonderful insights about how reflections works in any Brain Based Community. Galba said… “I certainly see myself as a reflective person…” and any who read the amazing contributions would more than agree. Would you agree that there are a few precautions….![]()
In Galba’s words… “I think the downsides are that reflection can be misplaced when one is faced with urgency, as you say. It could also possibly be a trap if I apply the wrong ‘decision or rules’ once I've reflected on something and erroneously go and do something that worked well in the past, but is not appropriate in the new situation that I'm facing….” Interestingly that problem comes more than most realize and it tied to an inability to transfer or adjust insights to solve similar problems.
For Galba…”Probably a good precaution against that pitfall is to ask 2 questions, 1 What is similar about the situation that I am currently facing, compared with what I've experienced in the past and 2, What is different?” Great questions for transferring skills to a new situation!
I liked the 3 upsides are that Galba found….
1. Reflection helps to me to learn more efficiently. For example, Galba developed a personal learning tool based on David Kolb's Learning Cycle and I use it to review my Learning Programs and presentations and used as a learning to guide future actions. Systematically using that tool also sparks ideas for new products and services.
2. Reflection also helps Galba to avoid needlessly repeating errors of the past.
3. It acts as a reminder of core values, so it's a wellspring of personal and intrinsic motivation.
Galba promotes the benefits of reflection in an Emotional Intelligence Program, as a cornerstone to developing greater Emotional Intelligence … and from the quote …”For me, the ROI on reflection is amazing…” it is clear that it works well. Bravo … thanks for the reminders to stop and look at a day at work Intrapersonally Galba! And thanks for your deep insights for how reflection works! I find myself needing is most on the busiest days and I am always glad for the kind of inspiration you bring to the topic! Make it a good one….
