Deborah Brown asked … Do You Look Through the Windshield or Rearview Mirror of Your Business? The discussion that followed over at BizInformer interested me for several reasons.
I was challenged by an appeal to the mind's mathematical windshield with a further question … “Have you ever contemplated the
mathematical equation of what percentage of vision the rearview mirror is compared to the windshield?”
No question ... Deborah makes a good point that both count. While it’s true that to know what is behind us helps us to make decisions about what is in front of us… some firms look more through the rearview than through the windshield.
Backward views, according to Debora include… “things we've done or said, things we shouldn't have done or said, things we WISH we'd done or said.” The firm looking back more than forward will collide and people there get taken out in process. She is really appealing for more spatial, and intrapersonal intelligence in the workplace... as I see... and both could save many of the sinking firms in my city. What do you think?
By contrast Deborah suggested that …”The view in front of us hasn't happened yet - we can impact it - we can turn sharply to avoid a bumpy spot or purposefully select the path less traveled.”
I like to think that I glance backwards to learn from my experiences and gaze forward to transform parts that work well into new realities for a better future. How do you look back and look forward?
