I was intrigued today by Dr. Tammy Lenski’s wisdom in the post … Getting Heard at Work: What to Say When You Don’t Feel Heard.
Tammy posted the case of a person she worked with … but it could have been any of us ... who felt frustrated ... and we all do at times.
Dr. Lenski quoted her client's words … “The more I think someone isn’t
listening to me, the angrier I get. The louder I get.” And Tammy noted the loudness of her words. When it comes to the brain … anger is compounded by the fact that it stirs up chemicals such as cortisol … which keep the anger coming. Do you hear the cortisol flowing through this woman’s words…? According to Tammy … one problem was that she did not hear it.
Tammy concluded that “rehearsed is usually better than loud…” Why does that work well when you think about your brain’s wiring…? When you rehearse how you will speak and communicate at a time when cortisol is not surging through your brain… you’ll be more likely to use what you’ve built into your memory … when the surges come through anger. It all starts with hearing our anger as Tammy helps people to do so well. Then … it helps to see what is going on inside the brain… and how you can change the effects. Thanks Tammy for walking us through another chance to “speak and feel heard!”
