Does For-Profit University Create Innovative Thinkers or Wealthy Owners?

The University Of Phoenix Online Learning Industry … leads the for-profit university industry for a lion’s share of students. I was interested in the CNN.com talk with Dr Bill Pepicello - recently appointed president of the University of Phoenix .

I teach at several graduate and undergraduate levels of this Apollo Group of about 300,000 students which operates in 39 states and kubek_uop.jpgonline.

Pepicello spoke to AP  this week about “the university's mission, plans and the landscape of for-profit higher education.”  Everybody keeps asking me why …”The university plans to pay $154.5 million over the next 20 years for naming rights to the Arizona Cardinals' new football stadium.”  So I was glad to hear Pepicello’s response…  

“If you go to any given state, our presence is actually pretty modest. We like to say we got big by being small. Often people locally don't have a real idea about what the University of Phoenix is, what the network is like, what they're really part of in the University of Phoenix system. So the naming rights (are) part of a larger branding initiative.”

How does “branding” affect learning as you have experienced it…?

When the president was asked how much money pays for marketing as compared to learning, the answer was… “in 2005 Apollo Group spent nearly $485 million on selling and promotional expenses and $936 million on instructional costs and services.”

What do you think about the merger between learning and business? Does it create creative thinkers and leaders ... who will put the at the cusp of innovation in the 21st Century? Is there a conflict of interest?
