What are you afraid of most at work? Name that monster and you could be ready to sidestep its kick today - that’s how the brain works best to overcome fears that shut down business brains.
Here are the top ten fear factors that work against your business brain. When you know where it comes from … you can step away from fear that: ![]()
1. Reduces your capabilities to think clearly
2. Prevents you from moving forward in a deal
3. Causes you to avoid certain people
4. Creates tone that others run from …
5. Robs sleep
6. Leads you to eat too much or too little
7. Adds stress
8. Ratchets up bad judgments
9. Steals self-confidence
10 Works against motivation to succeed
I was especially inspired by Thomas J. Stanley’s best selling book, The Millionaire Mind, which among other things, inspires life as an adventure without fear. That’s because fear stalks and stomps on our brains like killers that ambush healthy humans in lonely parks at night.
1. Since fear reduces your capabilities to think clearly… you can settle down the basal ganglia part of your brain that holds things you’ve learned to fear…. Do this by spending time with a person who thinks clearly and simply copy how he or she reacts to similar situations…. That teaches your basal ganglia a new and better way past fear.
2. When you feel yourself moving away from a good deal … get together with a person you respect- who tends to take winning risks. Discuss your deal - and ask for ideas that person might suggest for a step-at-a-time plan to jump on the deal. In so doing your brain will learn a new pattern past fear that held you back in past.
3. When you sense you tend to avoid certain people…ask those people to lunch… a game … or onto a project team with you. Believe it or not the mere asking … will begin to rewire your brain past fear - to see new possibilities from this person.
4. In order to fall into poor tone that others run from - do something good for you today. Let go of whatever you fear … simply by revving up the serotonin that comes from respecting and valuing you in a tangible way.
5. To prevent fear from robbing sleep… go golfing … hiking … or fishing … because an active life that increases energy and drive away from fear in the basal ganglia -can move your day into the pleasure control loops of your brain.
6. When fear leads you to eat too much or too little - take yourself out to your favorite restaurant - with a good friend - and share what you are doing to face the fear. That tactic alone - allows you to mix food with pleasure to rewire your brain for a healthier diet.
7. To get past the stress - caused by fear - add endorphins that come from laughter and rewire your brain against fear.
8. Just as you’ll ratchet up bad judgments because of fear - you can learn to make great decisions through the power of a stress free mind.
9. If fear steals self-confidence - plan a talk - or start discussion … on it’s opposite and in so doing you can help your brain dispel fear for confidence ... it’s healthy opposite.
10 To combat the fear factor that works against motivation to succeed. It’s a good idea to build up your serotonin level and your brain will reboot to harness more motivation and inspiration that helps you to succeed.
Don’t let fear get a grip - before you fight back. People who see signs of fear and who respond with a brain based strategy - before fear grips their mind, can prevent fears from further spreading into their basal ganglia. What do you think?

Ellen:
Great post. I linked to it and used it as a take off for a post I did on the relationship between fear and self confidence on my www.CareerCommonSense.com blog today. Thanks for posting it.
