Worrying too much lately? If so … this habit could impair your brain … as the very things you fear nail you. Verbeke and Bagozzi in 2000 reported survey results from high tech employees who admitted they spent much time worrying about their jobs. The survey found these workers to be 17% less productive than workers who seldom worried about their jobs. ![]()
Worry tends to work against the brain in several ways:
1. Stress that comes from worry creates chemicals such as cortisol which work against learning and achievement at work.
2. Worry can lower the body’s immune system and that makes people who worry less well than those who learn not to worry.
3. Other people tend to avoid people who worry when looking for business partners … or simply searching out people to whom they offer new opportunities.
4. Promotions and other perks will go to people who worry less, partly because those who worry signal uncertainty and insecurity to leaders.
So what are the alternatives to worrying about work?
First… focus on an upbeat project idea or even a hobby that adds challenge and pleasure to your day … but that does not add worry.
Second … laugh at pretty much everything … because laughter dispels worry in the human brain.
Third … Exercise for even a few minutes per day … since the extra oxygen to your brain can shift brain waves and create new neuron pathways for satisfaction … even when things are far less than perfect.
Fourth … spend time with your pet … or adopt a pet … and watch what a devoted animal does to return your sense of well-being as problems tend to fade from mind.
Finally … avoid unhealthy sugars and fats for snacks at work – and instead select foods for the brain such as sugar-free trail mixes.
What do you do to dispel the worry that impairs your brain?
