What Makes People Diverse Anyway?

In a terrific post today over at … Beyond Madison Avenue … I was challenged to ask… What makes people diverse anyway?

Quoting from an article from
Huffington Post by Walter Benn Michaels, a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago … and met a challenge for “a new kind of equity”  from True.
diverse_humanity.jpg
In Michaels’ words….

"Diversity is useful. But what it's mainly useful for is selling people a bill of goods, the main one being the idea that as becomes an increasingly unequal society, everything will be OK if all the rich people - like the stars of TV shows and the executives on

Madison Ave
-- come in the right colors."

What do you think? Maybe these words describe why so many people today claim that ... "
Diversity Training Stinks"

M
ichaels added …. "Right now America  leads the developed world in income inequality and the top 1% of American families is richer than the bottom 90% -- would those facts be less disturbing if the 1% were black and brown as well as white and yellow?"

According to BMA …  “attributing diversity to the color of one's skin is a deeply flawed practice.”

The reason? Because … “what makes a group of people ‘diverse’ is the cultural and social background of the people in the group, not their skin color.”

What “makes people truly unique is their brains, not their skin color.” Wow! Think of where any community could go when we tap into more people’s brilliant minds for answers that promote peace and goodwill …. It’s time to let go of the fixation we have with more shallow human differences -- skin color… and let’s capitalize on minds that offer unique perspectives for the future. Does that inspire you as it does me? What do you think?

wow! a response from a real live doctor!

I've just always thought it was so counterproductive (and borderline racist) for societies and organizations to make race the criteria for diversity.

Diversity comes from a multiplicity of viewpoints and perspectives, not from ensuring there's always a box of five color crayons handy.

Thanks for your response!!!

True

Thanks for stopping by True, and thanks also for the inspiration on this keen topic. There is a reason that we talk so much about diversity and live it less. I think your suggestions have opened other pathways for innovation on a topic that could benefit all of us! It will be fun to watch the trends.

I agree with you that diversity is a result of cultural experiences and backgrounds but skin color is the shell that cues these factors.

unless employers test/interview to see how someone thinks, skin color will continually carry weight with employers and employees for that matter.

the desired result is to get diverse brains but those brains come with bodies, and bodies come with skin...

What a powerful statement ... "the shell that cues these factors..." Yes, you are so right. I'll also admit to being terrifiby biased! I have learned some of the deepest lessons I live today from Inuit, a deeply close friend from Ghana, Mexicans I work with, South Americans, Europeans, and so many others! All came with bodies and differences ... but it was their wonderful minds that distinguished them.... Your comments inspire us all to see more in people around us! Thanks!

So moving foward Ellen, I suppose that testing for multiple intelligences would be a better way to get diverse thinkers. what kinds of tests/questions or line of reasoning do you see being implemented for the interview process?

Thanks Roger, I guess that really is what we do to capiltalize more on diversity -- now that you mention it. I hadn't thought of it that way - but you are right. We do use the test for this at http://www.brainbasedbusiness.com/2006/04/how_are_you_smart_anyway_1.html Does that make sense?

Ellen,

The MITA questions are helpful. Would you recommend any online surveys that generate results showing strengths and weaknesses for multiple intelligences?

Thanks,

R
