I don’t blame firms for dumping their “training program.” In fact they should have likely stopped the suffering of “trainees” far sooner. Does that mean people should not develop new skills? Absolutely not. Just the opposite is true … for the most successful companies out there. It is just that they go about it in different ways. ![]()
There’s a terrific discussion on this topic over at Lisa Haneberg’s …Talking Story. Lisa speaks of … ‘Unplanning Learning: Debunking the Merits of a Traditional Corporate Curriculum” and I especially loved her questions…
1. What does it mean to learn?
2. What does that moment of learning look and feel like?
3. What catalyzes learning?
4. How much learning occurs during training?
From a brain based perspective ... learning means very little about what is formatted into most current corporate curriculum. Instead it means to solve problems and to create products ... Corporate curriculum offers facts and ... workers for the most part ... spit back expected answers.
In brain based approaches ... people draw from at least 8 intelligences and everybody speaks and teaches one another another. Research shows that if you teach at the same time you learn, there is 90% more retension. Does it make sense to you ... why one leader's speaking does not equate another listener's learning?
The aha moment of learning comes faster to those who connect new insights to what they already know... or to those who start with what they find interest in.... Furthermore ... when people work toward a great vision ... by themselves or with others at work ... they apply skills in amazing innovations.
That’s why very little "training takes place at most workplaces” … as Lisa pointed out so well. It’s also why we need to reboot staff development programs. Let's start by getting rid of outmoded curriculum in exchange for mind-bending profitability programs. Thanks for the incentives Lisa ... your ideas add amazing benefits to any business!
