Let Your Temporal Lobes Pull You Past Tough Learning Curves!

Learning a new skill at work lately? Or do you plan to take on a new sport like golf? If so … you are likely operating a great deal from your working memory. How can you know? If it’s difficult… frustrating at times … and a bit overwhelming … that’s because your working memory is small… and facts there are new and unfamiliar. Did I just say golf… when it promises to be sunny tomorrow!

With amazing accuracy … your temporal lobes can convert immediate materials you learn and apply  into
recent and long-term memory … as well as store and retrieve long-term memories. It’s quite miraculous how facts… figures … and memories … move from the crowded and less comfortable working memory into the long-term memory. temporal lobe.jpg

Can you remember a time you practiced driving a car … applied what you read in the driver manual … and showed the driving instructor you had it nailed? Or when you reached that aha moment? Those events would be enough to move the work you learn from your short term … less reliable storage spot … into long – term storage where you can retrieve it comfortably every time you jump in the car to take off.

The temporal lobes …  also sort out sounds and images, so you can recognize people around you at work … as well as remember objects such as your coffee cup …. It also enables you to integrate hearing and speech … so that if you’re asked to do something … you can follow through.

To get facts from the short term to long term memory for easy remembrance and use:

1. Use outside of the mind gimics - such as lists ... hooks to hang keys ... and memory games.

2. Play with ideas and laugh about the silly things you do to remember and your mind opens to remember more.

3. Take learning in small increments and a step-at-a-time but give it time -- daily!

Did you know that your temporal lobes also generate memory you may need in a flash and the appropriate emotions for a happy moment … a sad moment … and pretty much everything in between…. Enough reason to hang onto those temporal lobes next time you fly out the door for work? What do you think…? As for me … I plan to golf a game tomorrow to make sure the temporal lobes are still working as they should! What’s your adventure for the week?
