Feel frustrated or yell at Ziggy … the cat … this morning on the way out the door to work? It’s often related to health in your frontal lobes! With frontal lobe damage … for instance … people change their social behavior. A person's personality can undergo severe changes after an injury to the frontal lobes, especially when both lobes are involved….
Healthy frontal lobes also initiate many voluntary actions, such as
looking toward an interesting painting on the wall, getting that cup of coffee in the morning, or relaxing the bladder to urinate. Injured frontal lobes prevent you from planning and organizing even ordinary actions … or having to re-learn even simple tasks.
In Alzheimer's disease the frontal lobe damage might cause a person to do the same thing over and over again such as folding a paper, putting a jacket on and off, or repeatedly swiping or touching a thing with no logical purpose.
The frontal lobes control routine motor skills, such as composing an email, playing the piano, or buttoning your jacket. They also control complex mental skills, such as speech, reflection, focus, problem-solving, and mapping for the future.
Look at somebody’s face to see what’s going on in the frontal lobes… because the face often is a dead giveaway of moods or attitudes. It also operates your hand and arm gestures in ways that integrate expressions and gestures with mood and feelings. So you pop a guy in the nose while you grimace … or shake his hand with a smile.
Specific areas of the frontal lobes will control specific movements, on the opposite side of the body. For most people, the left frontal lobe controls complex language functions language functions.
A new study shows that when the right frontal lobe is damaged … people cannot get punch lines of a joke … and they tend to prefer easy slapstick humor. BTW … do you know what two parts of the brain helps you to do better math?
