As business moves into faster lanes and global directions … the ability to interact and at time influence your CEO has become even more important. However many people I talk to … express frustration with their CEO’s roles … and uncertainty about how that could change.
Here are a few things workers can do to impact corporate governance: ![]()
1. Engage your direct report in a discussion to compare the company’s vision statement with the practices of the CEO as you understand these to be…. Use this session to fact find and especially to identify effective contributions or you will not get further in your process.
2. Ask for clarity about how the company’s vision is developed and assessed at the top. Share your perceptions about how this vision plays out at work and offer a solution for one or two key problems you see.
3. Write a column in a local paper about your views on leadership and how these affect the profitability of a company. Ask for a spot at the next staff meeting to discuss the ideas you showcase and stir up a conversation about leadership growth for all.
4. Invite the CEO home for dinner … or out to lunch. Look for ways to support the person at the top and you will find many more ways to influence him or her. All influence takes risk … and many people are surprised at how they can help to change a firm for the better … simply by sparking a relationship … small but supportive … with the CEO.
Come armed with a solution or two for a problem you’ve noticed at work … and you could become a candidate yourself … for the next CEO search. It’s amazing how far one supportive exchange can rewire a the corporate brain – and solution oriented encounters with your leaders … could become part of the very future of your organization. What do you think?
