If you've sat in a staff meeting lately ... that was both brief and interesting … you’ve also likely seen people strategize to make it that way. Most people I talk to say meetings are boring and go on forever. It's no surprise that people dislike staff meetings ... since the human brain is wired for about 5 minutes focus ... and the person talking usually wires for far more spoken words....
Here are 5 secrets that will shorten your next staff meeting… so that content is covered in a brief period of time…
1. Hold all reports to 20 words … maximum. Yes… it can be done!
Winston Churchill said, in his shortest speech… “Never, never, never give up. Never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.” There … the meeting is over….
2. Leaders of the meeting should laugh at themselves within the first five minutes of the meeting … to set the tone for others to take themselves less seriously.
3. Ensure discussion from the floor at least equals discussion from the podium … and when podium discussion surpasses floor discussion … call the meeting to an end….
4. Send any narcissist out ... on a bike ... for pizza … before the meeting begins….
5. Ask every participant to write out and submit one brief tip to improve the next meeting as a requirement to exit the session.
Think any of these would turn your staff meetings into a useful and more bearable event…? Any secret you would add to the list…?
