Never before have we needed leaders that guide our increasingly changing and too often troubled world. This leads to the question… what do extraordinary leaders possess by way of transformation... that their ordinary counterparts lack?
What separates great leaders where you work?
Are there unique traits or characteristics that define the kind of leadership you’d vote for if given the chance. John Kotter, the world – renowned expert on leadership and change ... at theAccording to Kotter … lack of good leadership today is related to the lack of change in business settings. “Most organizations don’t embrace change,” he said. Added to that… “ Unless there is an imminent danger of losing their job, in the normal corporate culture, change is slow to happen.
Kotter calls for a return to great leadership through change as follows:
1. Establish a sense of urgency
2. Form a powerful guiding coalition
3. Create a vision
4. Communicate that vision
5. Empower others to act on the vision
6. Plan for and create short-term wins
7. Consolidate improvements and keep the momentum for change moving
8. Institutionalize the new approaches
Even successful change efforts are “messy and full of surprises…,” Kotter said. Any significant changes going on where you work … that would show us more details of the great leader at work …? How would you describe an environment for change that brings improvement?
