According to Deborah Tannen in her bestselling book, Talking from 9 to 5, men and women communicate in ways that decide who gets heard who prospers and who does what work?
While this book raises some questions … it cannot answer … it is filled with details that piece together the story of gender in ways that could help us to value both women and men more – without subsuming one to serve the other. ![]()
What impressed me most about Tannen’s book is the fact that she used data and stories to show not one way as right … and another way as wrong…. Instead this books is really about looking at communication from two points of view ... in order to understand more from both approaches.
In these days of fast mobility or loss from downsizing ... Deborah urges companies to look beyond the bottom line ... to see the real power that exists as people learn to talk in ways that bolster rather than undercut their influence. What do you think?
