I was interested in an interesting post over at PIGWISDOM.COM by Jack Hayhow who wrote on Rick Krska’s “Finding a mentor.” It was part of the New InSight: Lessons from Leaders Episode – “Rick Krska, President and CEO of LaserCycle, Inc. and InkCycle, Inc., discusses how finding a mentor is not as hard as it may seem. Interesting take!
You can Watch part five of Rick's interview. “
It seems to me that an ideal approach to landing a top-level mentor is to request 10 minutes only ... of a person’s time and then ask for the same once or twice each month. I’ve heard of people doing this and watched it turn into a wonderful relationship over many years. The key is to respect busy people’s time and keep your 10 minute request under 20 minutes at the most.
You’ll get farther with a top executive mentor by:
1. Asking a focused ... two-footed question
2. Keeping times short…focused… and not too often
3. Calling rather than visiting the person … at least in the first stages
4. Showing interest in the mentor’s life and well being… without invading his or her privacy.
What would you add to the smarter tips for gaining wisdom over time from a mentor?
