Mary Schmidt gave some excellent reasons over at Thinking Strategically – Acting Tactically why fear fails as a strategy in leadership or in marketing and research on the brain would support her insights!
Mary cautions us against … “fear strategies that leaders like Cheney,
Rove and Company have been using for years.” She also pointed out that “People can and do adapt to pretty much anything – it becomes routine and a part of the fabric of everyday life… “ even people living in Chernobyl.
Mary is dead right when she warns us … “ – frightened people aren’t rational, which means they may not act as you expect or wish.” Researchers tell us that fear is far more than a state of mind – is conjures up chemicals that can be harmful to the human brain. In fact fear is often the culprit to lock out change and growth in people’s lives. That’s why I agree with Mary’s blog that reminds us … “Fear isn’t a good strategy in leadership or marketing.” Makes me wonder though … why do some folks use fear tactics to manipulate people – when fear is so deadly to the human brain and to business?
