Is Hewlett-Packard part of the Mafia? Can somebody tell me what's up with this firm…? After days of filling out their rebate forms – to be sent to five places – with serial numbers … dates… and hoards of information bits … for a costly computer sold to me on that rebate promise – I entered hell with HP rebate games. I wrote details in an earlier post, titled Is Hewlett-Packard's Rebate Deal Really a Deal? on June 9th. At that time respected people told me they too had met hell’s flames with rebate runarounds with these HP guys. Have you heard about rebates that appear to be a Mafia-like-racket? ![]()
Here’s what happened in a nutshell: In June I bought a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion desktop, two monitors, a printer and two years extra insurance against glitches… and I was told at Circuit City that two grand could be reduced by $300 smacks with HP rebates and promotions. So I should be happy… right? Wrong…. My nightmare made me look at who is getting the real deal here… and you guessed it… Hewlett Packard wins at the expense of its customers … a fat 2/3 of the time.
It just got worse. Today I got their notice that “the purchase date is outside dates of this offer.” Of course it is not –the Circuit City Manager told us we had 30 days to send in rebates – then they helped me through the miles of cutting … finding codes and sending in within 3 days of purchase…. Days of work lost from my small business… headaches to read their poorly written instructions… hours of help from a store’s management to make sure we had it right … and then a refusal letter – to show HP had never planned on rebating.
YEAH CIRCUIT CITY GUARANTEES ALL THEIR REBATES... AND THANKS AGAIN CIRCUIT CITY FOR THE WAY YOU TREAT CUSTOMERS WITH RESPECT!
Is Hewlett-Packard with the Mafia? If so, where’s Eliot Spitzer to check their false ads?
I have stats that show that rebates are only successfully collected 22% of the time … What’s up at Hewlett-Packard? And further research shows that companies who give rebates… do so in hopes that buyers don’t get them…. What kind of customer service is this folks?
Have I just become one of the 78% of customers who are paying top CEO salary – and if so what can be done?
Maybe not even the Mafia would have been so brazen with clients. This is the first rebate return of my 5 that had to all go with different information to different spots. Can I expect the refusals with come from all 5? So far this tactic makes Mafia look like the pope … and I hope I am wrong in what this rebate game appears to be after from false ads and malicious intent.
Any wisdom out there – I am at a loss for what to do – and I hope I am wrong and these rebates were reputable -- but feel I cannot ignore this problem… and they leave no person or office to contact. Any help out there?

You're off to a great start by broadcasting your discontent here in your blog. Unfortunately, this has been going on for quite some time. Some other options:
-Return everything to Circuit City for a full refund...and communicate you're returning for the rebate issue. If I were you, I would place a new order with either Dell or CDW.
-Email Mark Hurd, CEO of HP. I've been quite displeased with the way HP has executed the past 5-10 years. I'm sure the founders are rolling over in their graves. However, Mr. Hurd seems like a stand-up guy and is definitely turning the company around. Any strong CEO will welcome your inquiry and it wouldn't surprise me if his staff is empowered to make things right.
-Contact your state Attorney General and make a formal complaint. It won't likely result in a rebate payout but at least we'll get this issue on the radar of someone who can fight the fight.
-Spread the word at any number of public complaint sites. Hitting a firm in their wallet or in the public eye is a good way to get some attention.
