Where are the Obstacles to Creative Change and What is Heather's Solution (Part 5)

In Heather Harris' leadership roles in both business and non-profit sectors ... she helps people to develop individual potential, organizational effectiveness and community strength.

Because one of her strengths is "conflict resolution..." I asked Heather...

What do you see as an obstacle to creativity in your workplace?

Working in isolation is a significant obstacle to creativity in my creativity seeds.jpgworkplace.

While many of the everyday tasks are best handled singularly, the development of organizational programs and strategic goals require the synergy of a team ... to maximize results.

When willing spirits unite for a common purpose, opportunities for creative brain-storming and positive relationship-building abound.  Constituent buy-in and involvement is critical to the actual implementation of organizational programs and strategic goals in my current work situation.  Thus, the challenge of nurturing solid relationships with key constituents to avoid the pitfalls of working in isolation is one of my ongoing top priorities.

Isolation is often named as a real hurdle for many leaders in today’s climate so I am glad you raised it. What solution brought you the best results for your efforts?

Understanding and implementing the philosophy of “servant leadership” Heather Harris.bmphas led to the successful investment of key constituents in organizational affairs.

Where to from here for you Heather in terms of creativity… leadership … or the courage it takes to develop skills and strengthen teams.

Transcending my current involvement in the business sector, my personal leadership philosophy is to develop strong, relationship-centered teams. I am speaking of teams that are increasingly capable of producing effective results.

Where would a person start to do this, in your opinion, Heather?

If you begin to unlock individual potential and creativity in yourself and others… you have already taken  the first step of this process – with courage

Teamwork comes easier to those who develop a "servant leadership" according to Heather Harris. And I agree. Thanks Heather! At the same time ...  it takes courage and brings challenges, especially when you work with difficult peopl... [Read More]

Ellen, I find that Heather's focus on teams is crucial to positive workplace change since I see teams as a way to break old patterns and old ways of doing things. Would you agree that when we work with others, it can jar us out of the ways we approached things in past because our brain is at this point wired for more creativity? I know I seem to get many creative ideas as I work with another person, not because I get the exact idea from the other person, but because that person has a different perspective, my mind seems to look at the problem from a whole new angle. That is when a new idea often emerges as a solution to a problem. Certainly Heather's wisdom here is a technique to bring more minds into the creative process and pushes what I'll term as "collective creativity!" Thoughts?

Thanks for the insights you gleaned from this interview, Robyn! Heather seems to be a Master at drawing out people differences ...in ways that spark insights ... without catching fire into flame wars.

That is the heart of a truly creative leader and is also the need workers are longing for in this era. Facts are flying everywhere these days ... and some business leaders are harnessing these fast flying facts ... into money-making-mass-production ... but that narrow approach to profit... will kill human creativity because it works against the way minds are wired for brilliance.

Heather probably has a much better response... but there's my 2-bits.... Now you have me thinking!
