Timothy Warner, at Mother Tongue Annoyances tells how to how to handle tough questions from an audience. As a technical trainer at
(Microsoft Certified Trainer, Tim learned how to handle 'stumper' questions by:
1. Rephrasing the question
2. Redirecting the question to the audience/class
3. Admitting your ignorance
4. Finding a solution
There’s a lot of wisdom packed into Tim’s list! I especially liked the idea of throwing questions back to the audience. Why? Because questions … like people… come in all shapes and sizes and when they get tossed into audiences you can usually expect great surprises in response.
Questions not only liven a passive audience… they also trigger the human brain to grow dendrite cell connectors to:
-- what people already know about a topic
-- stories about how they came to know what they know
-- other related ideas that come to mind when asked
I still have one ringer question for you, though. If questions are so good for all of us… why do most speakers talk past their time … and then throw in the comment… “Guess there’s no time left for questions…. What do you think?
