In Seth Godin’s insightful post today, Fear of a small enemy, he shows how “Most big organizations operate out of fear as much as they do out of a desire for growth.” Seth reminds us, “And a new fear is spreading through the marketing department: fear of the little guy.”
Seth’s main point though, “that lone disgruntled customer can make an awful lot of noise on her blog…” intrigues me… because Seth has a way of writing that gets us thinking about the other side! Rather than take the position, “Your enemies, though small in number, can really hurt you now,” which of course is true … especially when a disgruntled customer get’s ripped off, why not shoot to create another side.
Tides are rising in favor of bloggers who show another way… and think of the new market possibilities could come from:
1. Tone like we see in blogs like Seth Godin’s which say it better than most, while respecting other players
2. Solutions suggested whenever a problem is raised in a blog – so that big business will begin to see business as it could be without the fear that drives greed
3. Partnerships between small and big players that would infuse ethics back into business deals and help us look beyond ourselves to build better markets
4. Creativity that listens to more voices… not less … and that draws it strengths from diversity that exists all around us whenever we act equitably to draw it out.
Thanks Seth for illumining the beginning stages of this new era – hopefully more voices like yours will emerge to lead the way. Let’s plug for a better market, one that fits a new economy. Why settle for a mere shift in power from big business to small. It seems to me we could work magic together here back at the drawing board of diversity that current events is handing to us.
After reading your blog today, I find myself asking, “If blogs helped to fuel a new era for business… what would this look like and how could the megaphone get passed around to more advantage for large and small players who want to connect for that purpose? “ I’m hoping somebody smarter than me will jump on this one….
