Writer Rod Minchin told how a 60 year old Geordie woman woke up after suffering a stroke and started speaking with a Jamaican accent. Linda Walker lost her distinctive North-east twang, AFTER The former university administrator, suffered what is known as foreign accent syndrome, where brain injured patients wake up speaking differently.
Some say it resembles a Jamaican accent and for others… it’s an east European sound. Either way, there is speech therapy and rehabilitation for patients like Linda Walker, who dislike their condition."
Nick Miller, a senior lecturer in speech language science at Newcastle University, said the condition could occur in patients who had suffered a stroke or other brain injury.
"It is not such a rare condition and I probably come across four or five cases a year," he said. What do you think?
