Prevent Prefrontal Cortex Problems at Work

Do you work with a person who interrupts, acts impulsively, starts prefrontal cortex.jpgproblems that could have been avoided, rarely focuses for long… or puts things off and forgets to finish them, or runs around doing everything at the last moment?

When a person’s
prefrontal cortex functions well they tend to be more targeted, and think before they speak or act. They find ways to express their feelings and tend to prevent conflict before it fuels. Is that you?

It’s tough to work with people whose prefrontal cortex does not function properly. An underactive prefrontal cortex… for instance… causes people to speak before they think, and prevents people from stepping back to reflect and to learn from their mistakes. They live for the now and tend to ignore putting plans in place for the following week. They often arrive late and see conflicts where none exist. There are things a restless, impulsive hyperactive and disorganized person can do to activate their prefrontal cortex.

1. Some drugs can be useful to alter a person’s
dopamine and serotonin release
2. Foods in small amounts such as chocolate or coffee can activate prefrontal cortex
3. Counter one problem behavior with it’s opposite and track results so brain rewires for a new pattern.

    For instance:
-- Write daily targets and check each event off to avoid disorganization

-- Practice not speaking when you think you see conflict - think about results
-- Reward yourself with a favorite evening out when you finish each project

The brain is much more elastic and flexible than previously thought. Furthermore it rewires daily because of what you do… which is why counter actions will tend to rewire the brain for a more active prefrontal cortex. Sometimes your best choice is … a combination of drugs such as Prozac along with actions such as those listed here.  I tend to lean toward doing what we can do for ourselves as a first step…. What do you think?
