If you’ve wondered whether anything could ever change at work… you
are like many we talk to at the MITA Brain Based Renewal Center. When managers or companies insist on too much attention to the details of their firm… and to the exclusion of other organizations around them … capabilities for change and improvement in the brain can be significantly reduced.
Psychologist Donald Hebb spoke of it as “too much focus on narrow details … "so that people lose sight of the broader horizons…. Have you seen this in your organization? If so… you are likely looking at the reason why change is so difficult for some workplaces to achieve. This problem actually changes the nature and wiring of people under its influence.
It’s the same barriers that people face when they focus on one book or one project exclusively … and allow their home or social life to collapse ... as a result of what is known as “Hebbian Learning….” It literally changes the way your brain wires.
Physical and psychological changes take place in the brain because of narrow focus and a lack of external stimuli and these changes make it harder for people to embrace change – even innovations that bring improvements….
Do you look beyond a narrow focus at work to see possibilities for change in your business? How do you look past Hebbian Learning to spark lifelong learning that leads to state of the art wires for your brain’s health? What do you think?
