Approachability Versus Working a Room according to Larry Bodine at Larry Bodine’s Professional Services Marketing Blog who quotes Scott Ginsberg’s article "Approachability Versus Working a Room."
Larry offers some very helpful advice against working a room, “because it makes you look like a politician working a crowd. He suggests approachability as a good alternative, and shows how that can happen when you:
1). Offer your card when asked for one by a new contact; take the time to actually appreciate and inquire about the cards of others
2). Spend enough time with each person to develop the common point of interest
3). Relax, choose a few key people to talk to; focus on both approaching them and letting them approach you
4). Come early, stay late. Don't sacrifice a great conversation and/or a potential relationship just because "networking time" is over.
Added to these excellent ideas, I was thinking that approachability would find something to share a laugh over … since laugher is a great way to prepare the brain to learn from and communicate better with others. It’s always best to laugh at self though, and that is what you’ll see an intrapersonally intelligent marketer do time and again…. What would you add to Larry’s terrific list…?
