Your Brain May Fight Against Your Efforts to Quit Smoking

I once worked with a man who tried to quit smoking by wearing kicksmok.gifpatches, chewing gum, fasting, praying and getting hynotized. He still smokes....  Have you ever tried to kick one habit or to launch another… and found your head fights back? Recently, smoking addictions brought new research on the brain, hormones, and behavior at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Researchers found that some hormones make it more difficult for people to quit smoking. Has it happened to anybody you know?

Hormones make it even harder for some to kick the habit and quit smoking and now it seems this may be even more difficult due to changes in levels of certain stress hormones. Researchers once believed that cortisol, a stress hormone that may lead to depression, made quitting more difficult. Recently, a Yale University School of Medicine study found that cortisol levels alone may not be as useful for predicting the ability to quit as the ratio of DHEA (another stress hormone) to cortisol. Indeed, research has shown that DHEA may protect the brain against some potential deleterious effects of cortisol. What do you think?
