Have you ever asked a person for directions when you are lost on a road trip?
You repeat back the directions …smile at the stranger…and pull away from the curb with confidence. It goes something like this ... "Turn left… three lights away turn right… go past a church under a bridge and then hang a left…." Been there?
Your passenger begins to chat… or worse somebody names the left when it should have been a right … and you are lost again. This time your confidence dwindles as directions leak out of your mind like water from a pail with holes.
You can prevent this loss and create a second brain of sort in a simple way. Those directions went into your short term memory … which holds a small memory capacity. When you use your mind to chat or think about other things or even to sing with a CD, your short term memory leaks out directions as it fills with the new ideas or thoughts.
Add capacity to your short term memory when you:
Jot down directions you are given as they are spoken. Use abbreviations such as Rt…Lft… or Rd. and you’ll get the accuracy you need while your benefactor is still there to ensure you got it right….
In the same way you can create a check list of targets for your day… and that list acts like an external short term memory … and takes the burden out of remembering. That way you’ll be there in the moment to enjoy life… and replace the stress of forgetting with the accuracy of your brief reminders. It’s just another way of being intelligent and it works well…. What do you think…?

I'm wondering if you recommend buying that new $1,000 brain, you wrote about earlier, to keep track of these checklists!
