At their blog Defense tech edited by Noah Shactman…. you can now get all the details on the latest pack mule they named BigDog.
Apparently, “the two bots were running around Marine Corps Air Station New River recently -- along with an exoskeleton-clad marine and a new trauma pod.”
Roboteers “at Boston Dynamics have been training the 165-pound, two-and-a-half foot-tall BigDogs to carry gear for soldiers and marines over uneven terrain.”
It’s a bit scary that the BigDogs will likely soon be much more than mechanical beasts of burden. This article -- suggests Darpa "is considering plans to arm these BigDog robots. Fascinating beasts! I have two questions though:
1). What significance is there in the fact that the robots clearly have no heads?
2). Will somebody be fitting the BigDogs to missions of active peace maneuvers?
Think of the possibilities for these brutes if we could wrap our heads around brilliant notions of prospering humans by their use…. What do you think?
