In one of my many discussions about the brain … with medical professionals in Ireland last week… I was made aware that we often accommodate physical
disabilities at work… but still tend to run from hiring or helping people with mental disabilities such as schizophrenia. That is a good point and it’s heartening news also to see that help may be on the way…
Interestingly … researchers recently discovered, a small protein in the brain known as neuropeptide S has been reported to bring about both profound wakefulness and create a calmer…less anxious state in animals…. Check back at Brain Based Business to see new upcoming research which is being prepared to show how this protein could work in as a bright new target for the treatment of psychotic behaviors as well as schizophrenia.
A team will also report results of studies that found neuropeptide S can reduce the biochemical and behavioral symptoms of schizophrenia in an established animal model for this mental illness that affects some 2 million Americans. Not an insignificant fact to wait for…. What do you think about how we help people with schizophrenia…? Are there still stigmas to mental health problems… as suggested by the medical professionals I worked with last week in Ireland…?
