Catch a Siesta for Your Brain's Sake

The University of Manchester just came up with a study you can handasleep at work.jpg your supervisors while you catch a siesta today… They show how brain cells or 'neurons' that keep our minds alert shift to “off” after we eat.

Do you see room for a siesta at work…? Dr. Denis Burdakov, the lead researcher based in Manchester 's Faculty of Life Sciences, said:

"We have pinpointed how glucose -- the sugar in food -- can stop brain cells from producing signals that keep us awake.”

The new mental mechanism discovered, is so sensitive it can detect the slightest changes in glucose levels – which researchers believe explains after-meal tiredness and shows why it is difficult to sleep when hungry.

Siestas that
do not extend into REM make you even more alert and researchers feel they have just moved closer to helping people with sleep disorders and body weight problems.

No wonder our Caribbean and European colleagues rigorously defend their siestas…. Can you see benefits from a siesta break in your firm…?

That picture reminds me of when I was pregnant and would take naps under my desk at lunch time while at work! Great info!

Marta, you make me laugh... Thanks for stopping by... It's washrooms that bring me back to the days when little feet kicked me in the bladder forever... Your comment also reminds me how much I loved being pregnant with my daughter... who is now married. Still that was such a meaningful time in my life that I still get regular wisdom and inspiration from sites like http://www.workfromhomemomma.com . Thanks for the good stuff, Marta...

Ah, washrooms! For me that was trying to pump breastmilk for my little one at home! Can I just say I am sooooo glad to be working from home now and wish that would have been the case back then. All my pregnancies were enjoyable too! Sigh.
